ANNOUNCEMENT

Burmese American Democratic Alliance (BADA), one of the 33 organizations signed on to the resolution of the Fort Wayne Conference, remains firmly committed to implementing the conference's resolution. BADA is also re-releasing the following statement, which was initially released on September 1, 2003; to reiterate its call for international community to remove the Burma's illegal military regime from power.

STATEMENT

We strongly condemn the speech made by self-appointed Prime Minister Khin Nyunt on August 30, 2003. We completely reject his plan to reconvene the National Convention adjourned in 1996 and drafting of a new Constitution for adoption through National Referendum. His speech immensely ignored the sufferings of the people of Burma under military dictatorship. The regime stubbornly resists the will of its people as well as that of the international community.

We firmly believe that the one and only genuine desire of the people of Burma is to honor the results of 1990 general elections. We also believe that military dictatorship itself is a roadblock to the long overdue democracy development and national reconciliation process in Burma.

We denounce the regime's orchestrated and premeditated violent attack on May 30, 2003 to assassinate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and National League for Democracy (NLD) leaders. We continue to fear for her safety and well-being of all political prisoners in Burma.

We call upon the United Nations, the United States, United Kingdom and the international community to do their utmost to take swift and effective measures:

1. To secure the safety and release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners immediately

2. To remove the illegal military regime from power

3. To honor the results of the 1990 General Elections
