Suzuki- Sidekick to Oppression Campaign back to top |
Since 1997, when the United States government enacted federal sanctions prohibiting new US business investment in Burma, many companies have taken their business elsewhere. Among them are Pepsi, Best Western, Texaco, and J. Crew. This is at the request of Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma. As Aung San Suu Kyi has repeatedly stated: "Until we have a system that guarantees rules of law and basic democratic institutions, no amount of aid or investment will benefit out people." When a company decides to do business with Burma, it is deciding to support an illegitimate military regime that is guilty of torture, rape and forced labor. Suzuki is a "Sidekick to Oppression" because it chooses to remain business partners with Burma. It has set up a direct partnership with one of the most brutal military regimes in the world. All Suzuki vehicles and cycles coming out of Burma are produced by Burma's Ministry of Industry, the same arm of the government responsible for arms production. The "Boycott Suzuki- Sidekick to Oppression" Campaign works to get Suzuki out of Burma. The Bay Area Burma Roundtable is focused on educating every Bay Area Suzuki retailer about Suzuki's ties to Burma. It is our goal to have every Bay Area Suzuki dealership realize that no motorcycle is worth the price of torture and that they can easily play a part in helping to Free Burma! |
