Dear Speaker Pelosi,

I am grateful for the continued support you have shown for the people of Burma.  You have shown strong leadership in making sure that essential legislation gets passed, such as the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act of 2003, its annual renewal, and the Block Burmese JADE Act of 2007. These sanctions are key to furthering pressure on the generals who rule Burma illegitimately.

[then just say how long you have lived in the San Francisco area, and mention how much support for the cause of Burma there is in this area]

I am writing to express my concern that even after 7 months have passed since the brutal crackdown on monks and peaceful demonstrators in Burma and as arrests and attacks continue, we still don't have new Burma sanctions by the US Congress. The brutal regime is forcing the people to approve their sham one-sided constitution to impose military rule forever. New US sanctions are greatly needed to support the people of Burma during this difficult time.

While both the House of Representatives and Senate unanimously passed new Burma sanction bills last December, we understand these bills were different.  The process of combining the two bills to create a unified one has gone on too long and we have no new Burma sanctions. I ask for Speaker Pelosi's direct involvement and leadership to ensure we have the unified bill created and approved as soon as possible.

Thanks,
